The Echidna Global Scholars Program
The Echidna Global Scholars Program is a leadership initiative of the Center for Universal Education at The Brookings Institution that focuses on advancing gender equality in education worldwide, primarily in the Global South countries. The Program gives scholars six months to research and conduct leadership development activities and also contributes to the expansion of the evidence base for gender-transformative education.

Program Overview
The Echidna Global Scholars Program consists of two main phases:

1. Pre-residency (Approximately 15-20 hours/week): Scholars develop their research and policy impact strategy during this phase. They collect in-country data, carry out analysis, participate in virtual workshops, and enhance their leadership abilities. It is the identification of barriers and engagement with local stakeholders.

2. Residency (Three and a half months in Washington, DC): In this phase, Scholars seek to expand the reach and impact of research publications, strategic impact capacity building, leadership development, and networking. Brookings collaborates closely with scholars to convey their research outputs to the public.

Qualifications
  • Applicants must have a master’s degree.
  • Professional experience for a minimum of 10 years in research/academia, non-governmental organizations, community organizations, or government.
  • Proficiency in English is required.
  • Issues related to education, development, and gender.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Passion for gender equality in education and dedication to creating better learning opportunities for girls, women, and gender non-conforming individuals.

Priority Areas for 2024
For the 2024 cohort, the program seeks applicants working on gender equality in education in the following areas:
  • Geographic priorities: This includes West Africa, South Asia, Central America, and regions with conflict, gender-based violence, child marriage, and reproductive health problems.
  • Targeted actors and communities of interest: These include marginalized girls, young women, gender non-conforming individuals, homeless youth, indigenous populations, and LGBTQ+ youth.
  • Research priorities: Such research projects ought to be centered on the development of learning, the promotion of skill acquisition, and the challenging of discriminatory norms towards education.

Benefits
Selected Scholars will receive:

  • $22,500 USD to assist with Living Costs.
  • Support for visa processing.

Application Deadline
The deadline for application to the Echidna Global Scholars Program is December 1, 2023. Interviews will take place in January or February 2024 and the selected candidates will be announced by March 15, 2024. It will start on July 1, 2024.
